Box Office Report: 'The Odyssey' Defies Expectations

The second week of a major film's release is often closely monitored, as it typically sees a significant drop in box office revenue. However, Christopher Nolan's latest venture, The Odyssey, has bucked this trend, experiencing only a 29% decline — the smallest drop in quite some time. The film managed to rake in an impressive $87 million, bringing its total to $286 million domestically and $639 million globally, surpassing the earnings of James Gunn's Superman. With this momentum, the $1 billion mark appears to be within reach, much to the delight of Universal Pictures and fans alike, while some YouTubers seem to have gone quiet amidst the film's success.
In contrast, the only other new release this week, Hadestown: The Musical, which captures a performance akin to Hamilton and tells the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, opened to a modest $9 million.
Meanwhile, Moana has shown some resilience, pulling in $102 million domestically and a total of $228 million, although this remains insufficient compared to the competition. Toy Story 5 has crossed the $1 billion threshold, even as Pixar faces significant layoffs under the new Disney leadership. Additionally, Despicable Me and its monster counterparts have accumulated $422 million, while Olivia Wilde's The Invitation continues to hold steady with $19 million.
Looking ahead, the upcoming weekend promises another major release with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is anticipated to make a significant impact at the box office.
