Essential Skin Prep for Flawless Makeup Application

Preparing your skin properly is crucial for achieving a radiant makeup look, especially if you have an upcoming photo shoot. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to ensure your skin is primed for makeup application, enhancing both texture and glow.

The foundation of a flawless makeup look starts with clean and hydrated skin. It’s important to note that while this guide offers general advice, consulting a dermatologist is recommended if you have specific skin concerns.

Taking care of your skin before applying makeup can significantly affect how your makeup appears throughout the day. In this guide, I’ll share some effective products I use for prepping my clients’ skin, along with some favorites from French beauty brands now available in the USA, including Bioderma, Caudalie, La Roche-Posay, and Embryolisse. For those visiting Paris, these products can be found in local pharmacies, and my French Pharmacy Guide can help you navigate your options.

You don’t need an elaborate 15-step routine to achieve great results. A simple regimen involving a good cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and regular self-care through exfoliation and face masks is sufficient.

To illustrate the importance of skin prep, think of your face as a canvas. Just as a painter needs a clean, smooth canvas for their artwork, your skin needs to be free of leftover makeup and dry patches to ensure that your makeup application looks its best.

Step 1 – Makeup Removal

Removing makeup every night is a non-negotiable step. My go-to product for this is Bioderma micellar water, a staple among makeup artists in Paris. For those in a rush, Bioderma's Makeup Remover wipes are also an excellent choice. The brand offers products tailored for every skin type, with color-coded packaging: red for sensitive skin, blue for dry/normal skin, and green for combination/oily skin.

Step 2: Cleansing

After makeup removal, washing your face is essential to eliminate any remaining dirt and oils. I prefer using Bioderma Sensibio Foaming Gel, which effectively cleanses while removing makeup, making it a perfect two-in-one product that eliminates the need for cotton pads.

Step 3 & 4: Self Care – Exfoliation & Face Masks

Exfoliation and face masks are vital for improving skin texture, and while they don’t need to be done daily, incorporating them once or twice a week can make a noticeable difference. I like to make this a relaxing ritual, often reserving Sundays for self-care. After a hot shower, I cleanse my face, gently exfoliate, and follow up with a nourishing face mask. The steam from the shower helps open up the pores, making it easier to remove impurities.

I enjoy lighting candles or listening to music while the mask works its magic. My skin always feels rejuvenated and plump afterward, and I aim to give my skin time to rest and reset before applying makeup again.

Some of my favorite products include:

  • Embryolisse Exfoliating Milk Powder – just add water to create a paste!
  • Burt’s Bees Gentle Exfoliation Scrub
  • Caudalie VinoHydra Moisturizing Mask – can be left on overnight!
  • Erborian BB Shot Mask – my top pick for sheet masks (pro tip: reuse it for a second application!).
  • Trader Joe’s Hydrating Biocellulose Sheet Mask – a fantastic option!

Step 5: Toner/Facial Mist

I love using moisturizing facial mists as toners. Depending on your skin type, you may prefer an astringent toner, but I focus on hydrating options. I enjoy spritzing my clients’ faces before applying moisturizer or primer, which feels refreshing and beneficial for the skin. Some of my favorites include:

  • Caudalie’s Grape Water Facial Mist
  • Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir Face Mist – hydrates, tightens pores, and brightens the skin.
  • Mario Badescu’s Facial Sprays – especially the Rose and Orange Blossom varieties, which are perfect for travel.

For a more natural alternative, consider using Rose Water or Orange Blossom Water, both of which are excellent for enhancing skin texture and addressing pigmentation issues.

Step 6: Moisturizer/Sunscreen

After cleansing and treating your skin, it’s crucial to lock in moisture with a good moisturizer and, during the day, a sunscreen. The choice of cream can depend on your specific needs, including anti-aging or pigmentation concerns. Ensure that your skin feels nourished and not tight after application. You can layer sunscreen over your moisturizer or choose a moisturizing sunscreen to simplify your routine.

Some of my top recommendations include:

  • Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré – a versatile moisturizer and primer that can also double as a mask during your self-care time!
  • Weleda Skin Food Night Cream – a beloved product from the Skin Food line.
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Tinted Sunscreen – one of the best sunscreens available that won’t irritate your eyes!

Every skin type has unique requirements, so it’s important to choose products that suit your needs. By following these steps with the right products, you can achieve soft, plump, and radiant skin, ensuring your makeup applies smoothly and looks natural.

While I’ve provided links to American retailers for these products, many of them are French, so if you find yourself in France, you can often purchase them at a lower price. If you need assistance finding the right products, I offer personal shopping sessions to help you navigate your options!

I look forward to seeing you at our next makeup appointment or shopping trip!

Bisous Bisous,
