Exploring the Microsoft Power Platform

Microsoft, the well-known creator of Windows and Office, often finds itself at the center of criticism online, particularly regarding its operating system decisions. This long-standing debate surrounding its software is unlikely to fade anytime soon. Like many users, I have experienced moments of confusion when things go awry, often spending hours trying to adjust settings. Such frustrations can lead to a negative perception of the company.

However, what many may not realize is that Microsoft has made significant strides in the professional realm. This article is not a promotional piece; I share my experiences with the Microsoft Power Platform out of personal enthusiasm and without any financial incentive. Recently, I have delved into the Microsoft Power Platform and am genuinely impressed by its capabilities, which I would like to share.

What is the Microsoft Power Platform?

You might have heard of Microsoft SharePoint and Teams, or perhaps you even use them. These products form the foundation of the Power Platform, which enhances Microsoft's cloud offerings through Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Power Pages, and Power Virtual Agents.

These tools empower users to create their own applications and implement programming solutions without requiring extensive technical knowledge or a background in IT. This approach is often referred to as a low-code platform, where predefined functions eliminate the need for custom programming.

It’s important to note that applications developed using the Power Platform are not intended for mass distribution; they are designed for internal corporate use to streamline processes. Furthermore, these applications operate exclusively within the Microsoft ecosystem and cannot be published on app stores.

Typically, SharePoint or Teams serve as the database for applications created with the Power Platform. Users can work with SharePoint lists or Dataverse instead of traditional SQL databases. Additionally, the applications can connect to various other databases like SQL and numerous APIs, thanks to the available connectors, making integration quite versatile.

Thus, the Microsoft Power Platform is a suite of cloud programs tailored for professional use within organizations, enabling the creation of applications suited for internal environments.

The End of the Traditional Excel Spreadsheet

You may wonder about the advantages of using the Power Platform compared to traditional methods, such as programming in Excel with VBA, which has also been used to optimize processes successfully.

While it is true that Excel can handle a lot, have you ever tried to work with Excel on a mobile device? It can be quite cumbersome, especially for operational staff who may only have access to a smartphone. Furthermore, creating a dashboard in Excel that incorporates various charts and sources can be time-consuming, and performance often suffers with numerous data points and formulas.

In contrast to the Power Platform, Excel is a slower, less flexible, and not particularly smart tool that is ill-equipped for the demands of modern digitalization. Although the Microsoft Power Platform does not replace Excel as a spreadsheet tool, it certainly diminishes Excel's role as an all-purpose solution.

With complex automation, versatile integration, enhanced performance, adaptability to different screen sizes, and the incorporation of AI, the Power Platform becomes an essential tool for any organization with multiple employees. No longer is there a need to hire a programmer for simple internal applications; employees with a knack for technology can now create their own custom applications using the Power Platform.
