Chris Hemsworth Reflects on 'Thor: Love and Thunder' Airing on TF1

Tonight, TF1 is set to air "Thor: Love and Thunder," a film that has sparked mixed reactions from audiences and faced challenges at the box office. Chris Hemsworth, who plays the titular character, has openly shared his regrets regarding the film's comedic direction.

Released in the summer of 2022, "Thor: Love and Thunder" is the fourth installment featuring Marvel's iconic superhero. Despite grossing over $760 million, the film did not resonate well with fans. It continued the whimsical and comedic tone established in "Thor: Ragnarok," yet many felt it fell short of expectations.

"It Became Too Silly"

In June 2023, Hemsworth expressed his ambivalence about the film during an interview with Variety. He remarked that the film's tone had shifted to a level he deemed "too silly": "We had too much fun, but it became too silly. It’s always hard to have that perspective when you’re in the eye of the storm... I love this way of doing things, it’s always something, but you never know how the audience will react."

The actor also recounted an amusing yet awkward moment when children from his kids' school critiqued the film. They commented, "We think it has too much humor; the action was cool, but not the special effects." Hemsworth found himself both entertained and embarrassed by their feedback.

A year later, he revisited his thoughts on the film in an interview with Vanity Fair, admitting, "I got caught up in the improvisation and the madness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing."

He stated, “Sometimes, I felt like a security guard for the team. I would read everyone’s lines and think, ‘Oh, they have much cooler stuff. They’re having more fun. What is my character doing? It was always: ‘You wear the wig. You have the muscles. You have the costume. Where’s the lighting?’ Yes, I’m part of this big project, but I’m probably quite replaceable.”

However, Hemsworth's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems more certain. Although he was no longer contractually bound to Marvel Studios after eleven years, he has confirmed his return as Thor for the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday" and indicated plans to reprise the role beyond that. It appears that financial incentives may play a role in his continued involvement.
