Could a Sequel to the Underappreciated Adventure Film Be on the Horizon?

Fans of the iconic game were eagerly awaiting this cinematic adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons, directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. However, despite the anticipation, the film's success was lukewarm, leading to questions about its future. Surprisingly, Goldstein has hinted that a follow-up could be possible.
Is Dungeons & Dragons 2 on the Way?
Three years ago, Dungeons & Dragons experienced a mixed reception, earning $208 million worldwide against a production budget of approximately $150 million. While the financial returns were modest, the film received positive reviews from both critics and audiences, particularly from AlloCiné viewers. This favorable reception seems to have left the door open for a sequel.
During an interview at Comic-Con with Screen Rant, Goldstein revealed that the script for Dungeons & Dragons 2 is complete: "We have written a sequel" and added, "We were hired to do that". However, he also noted that the project's future is uncertain due to economic factors, stating, "I don’t know if the film will happen for various financial reasons".
The topic of a sequel has been discussed previously. Initially, Paramount Pictures, Hasbro, and Entertainment One had ambitions to establish a franchise, but those plans did not materialize, likely due to the first film's underwhelming profits. Goldstein remarked, "These are expensive films to produce, but it would be really great to do it. We love the cast and think we’ve written something that fans would enjoy".
A Long-Standing Project
When the first film was released, producer Jeremy Latcham was asked whether he envisioned a sequel. He candidly responded, "It’s still too early to know what we will do with this vast universe. There are so many possibilities". He continued, "We are so proud of this film that we hope to have the opportunity to explore the possibilities of expanding the Dungeons & Dragons universe".
In Dungeons & Dragons, Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis portray an unlikely group of heroes who must work together to recover a lost relic. While fans await news of these characters’ potential return, Goldstein and Daley are currently busy directing the upcoming Star Trek project for Paramount.
