Navigating the World of Fragrance: A Personal Journey

The allure of a long weekend can be irresistible, especially when it offers the perfect opportunity for reflection and indulgence. This Sunday, rather than discussing skincare or haircare, I want to delve into the world of fragrances, a topic that I feel deserves more attention.

My personal fragrance journey has been quite straightforward, moving through a few key scents over the past decade. I started with Le Mâle by Jean Paul Gaultier, transitioned to Bleu de Chanel, and ultimately fell in love with the iconic Philosykos by Diptyque, captivated by its addictive notes of fig and fig tree. As I neared the end of my Philosykos bottle, The Body Shop introduced me to their new Italian Summer Fig.

Upon first sniff, I was struck by how closely it resembled my beloved Philosykos. A closer examination of their olfactory pyramids reveals that both fragrances share a similar structure, featuring green leaf notes, juicy fig heart notes, and a woody base. This similarity piqued my interest in adopting The Body Shop's offering as a potential dupe for Philosykos, especially considering its price point—30€ for 50ml compared to 105€ for 75ml of the latter. Thus began my exploration, which led to a surprising self-discovery: I might be becoming a bit of a fragrance snob.

It may sound trivial, but I struggled with the idea of wearing a scent from The Body Shop. There’s an inherent prestige associated with brands like Chanel, which convey a sense of luxury and elegance. Wearing such fragrances often feels like a reflection of one’s personality and status. In contrast, The Body Shop, while a reputable brand, lacks that same high-end aura. This realization made me reflect on how much value we place on the perception of luxury in our fragrance choices.

However, I don’t consider myself a snob in all aspects of beauty. I have no qualms about using skincare products from brands like Yves Rocher. Yet, when it comes to perfume, I believe it should represent our identity and the impression we wish to convey. Interestingly, while I enjoy using Yves Rocher products, I find it challenging to embrace one of their fragrances, despite their reported quality. This sentiment likely resonates with many, as evidenced by how much we are willing to spend on perfumes.

Nevertheless, The Body Shop is not a luxury fragrance house, and the packaging reflects that. The bottle itself isn’t unattractive, but the cap feels somewhat cheap, detracting from the overall impression. Although the outer packaging is well-designed and suitable for gifting, I decided to focus on what truly matters—the scent itself.

Weeks later, I must admit that my experience with Italian Summer Fig has not been entirely positive. My primary complaint is its lack of longevity. While Philosykos isn’t renowned for its staying power, the Italian Summer Fig fades quickly, often becoming undetectable within minutes. In a side-by-side comparison, the difference in persistence was stark; I found myself needing to reapply the Italian Summer Fig far more often, which diminishes its value.

Ultimately, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this fragrance, despite its pleasant initial scent. It might be better suited for body care products rather than as a signature scent. While I feel a sense of disappointment when a beauty product doesn’t meet my expectations, I also experience relief. If I had loved this fragrance as much as Philosykos, would I have been comfortable wearing The Body Shop for the next five years? Perhaps, but I’m grateful that I can avoid that dilemma, allowing me to embrace my inner fragrance snob without guilt.
