Peter Jackson Makes Long-Awaited Directorial Return with Tintin Sequel

After a decade away from directing a narrative feature, Peter Jackson has officially revealed his next project, marking his return behind the camera. The acclaimed director of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy is set to helm the long-awaited sequel to The Adventures of Tintin, reviving a project that has been on hold for fifteen years.
In an interview with Gold Derby, Jackson disclosed that he and screenwriter Fran Walsh have recently finalized the script for the new film. This sequel is a direct continuation of the 2011 film directed by Steven Spielberg, which Jackson produced at the time. The original plan was to switch roles for the sequel, with Spielberg as the producer and Jackson taking the director's chair. Despite the prolonged delays, Jackson emphasized that the story remains timeless and confirmed that this will be his next film.
The announcement comes as a surprise, especially since many fans had hoped to see Jackson return to the cinematic world of Middle-earth. However, with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Warner Bros. entrusted the direction to Andy Serkis, while Jackson contributed as a producer and co-writer alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Choosing to revisit Tintin illustrates Jackson's desire to complete a personal project rather than immediately return to the universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The Gap Since Jackson's Last Film
The last feature film directed by Jackson was The Hobbit – The Battle of the Five Armies, released in 2014. Since then, he has remained active as a producer and writer, creating documentaries such as They Shall Not Grow Old and engaging in various projects related to Middle-earth, yet he has not returned to directing a narrative film.
In early 2026, Jackson shared that the passing of his longtime cinematographer Andrew Lesnie in 2015 had a profound impact on his creative journey. Establishing a new artistic relationship behind the camera proved more challenging than anticipated, contributing to his extended hiatus from directing.
