WhatsApp Introduces Supervised Accounts for Kids Under 13: Essential Information for Parents
WhatsApp has launched supervised accounts for users under 13, allowing pre-teens to chat safely while ensuring parental oversight. Discover how this new feature works and what parents need to know.

WhatsApp, the world's leading messaging app, is now extending its services to a younger audience. Meta has launched a new feature called supervised accounts, designed to allow pre-teens to chat safely under the watchful yet unobtrusive eye of their parents.
A Streamlined Version to Safeguard Young Users
Previously, parents often had to lend their phones or overlook their children's actual ages to enable them to message family members. With this new feature, WhatsApp offers a tailored environment for users under 13 that focuses on essential communication.
In this specific version, the interface is simplified and stripped of complex features that could expose children to unsolicited content. Pre-teens can make calls and send messages, but they do not have access to information channels, 'Statuses,' or new AI tools like Meta AI. Additionally, location sharing and disappearing messages are automatically disabled.
Parental Control at the Forefront
The standout feature of this initiative is the enhanced parental control. To prevent children from engaging in conversations with strangers, parents must approve each contact request. When a new chat request comes in, you will receive a notification on your smartphone.
You hold the authority to accept or decline the contact. Furthermore, you can decide who can view your child’s profile picture or add them to group chats, such as those for sports teams or dance classes.
All of this management is safeguarded by a six-digit PIN known only to you. This code is essential for modifying privacy settings, preventing impulsive changes by younger users. Despite parental supervision, conversations remain end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that the content of exchanges stays private, even when monitoring contacts.
A Simple Setup Process
Setting up this new account requires a brief collaborative effort between parent and child, as both devices are needed.
After downloading the app on the pre-teen's device, you will need to select the option for creating a parent-managed account. Once the birth date is entered, a QR code will display on their screen, which you can scan with your own WhatsApp account to link the two devices.
This rollout is set to begin gradually in March 2026. It presents an excellent opportunity for parents to sit down with their children to discuss digital best practices, online respect, and the importance of not oversharing. This smooth transition towards digital independence allows parents to guide their children without throwing them into the deep end without support.
