Clint Eastwood and Sondra Locke: A Complicated Legacy

Sondra Locke stands out as the actress who collaborated most frequently with Clint Eastwood, featuring alongside him in six films. Their professional partnership was complemented by a romantic relationship that lasted for years, but it ultimately ended in a protracted and bitter legal battle.

Throughout his illustrious career, Clint Eastwood has shared the screen with many iconic actresses, yet none have matched the number of films he made with Locke. Between the 1970s and late 1980s, their artistic collaboration flourished, but their personal relationship soured, culminating in a highly publicized split.

The documentary Clint Eastwood: The Last Legend delves into this more intimate aspect of Eastwood's life, shedding light on the complexities of their relationship.

From Television Cowboy to Cinema Legend

Before establishing himself as a prominent film director, Clint Eastwood gained fame through his role in the television series Rawhide, which significantly boosted his popularity and earned him the title of “the most handsome cowboy” among viewers.

His career took a pivotal turn when he collaborated with Italian director Sergio Leone, starring in the groundbreaking spaghetti westerns A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). These films solidified Eastwood's status as a leading figure in the genre.

As his ambitions expanded, Eastwood transitioned to directing, eventually earning an Academy Award for Best Director for Unforgiven in 1993, which was released the previous year.

Six Films with Sondra Locke

During this ascent, Sondra Locke became a significant figure in Eastwood's life, both personally and professionally. They grew close while filming The Outlaw Josey Wales, despite both being married at the time—Eastwood to Maggie Johnson.

Their relationship quickly became public, and over the years, they collaborated on six films, including The Gauntlet, Every Which Way But Loose, Bronco Billy, Sudden Impact, and The Dead Pool. No other actress has shared the screen with Eastwood as frequently as Locke did, but their partnership was marred by personal turmoil.

A Bitter Breakup and Legal Battles

When their romantic relationship ended in 1989, it sparked a series of legal disputes. Locke filed a lawsuit seeking $70 million in alimony, accusing Eastwood of breach of contract, emotional distress, breaking and entering, and possession of stolen property.

She also alleged experiences of forced abortions and a coerced sterilization, although she later referred to these events as “mutual decisions.” This legal struggle lasted for 19 months and was particularly challenging for Locke, who was battling breast cancer during this time. Ultimately, a private settlement was reached between the two.

Locke's Continued Legal Action

However, the legal saga did not conclude there. In June 1995, Locke initiated another lawsuit against Eastwood for fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, which also ended in an amicable settlement.

Locke claimed that Eastwood had a detrimental impact on her career in Hollywood, leading her to pursue legal action against Warner Bros. for allegedly conspiring with Eastwood to undermine her directorial ambitions. This case, too, was resolved through a confidential agreement.

Sondra Locke passed away in 2018 at the age of 74 due to a heart attack.

Clint Eastwood's Enduring Career

Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood continued to thrive in his career, both in front of and behind the camera. Following Unforgiven, he directed notable films such as The Bridges of Madison County, Million Dollar Baby, and Gran Torino, further solidifying his legacy as a titan of American cinema.

His journey encompasses both artistic triumphs and significantly darker personal episodes, which Clint Eastwood: The Last Legend explores, revealing the man behind one of the most recognizable figures in film history.
