Exploring the True Story Behind 'Inventing Anna' on Netflix

Created by Shonda Rhimes, known for her work on Grey’s Anatomy, the series Inventing Anna delves into the life of the real Anna Delvey, a con artist who deceived New York's elite by posing as a wealthy German heiress. Delvey was ultimately sentenced to four years in prison for defrauding various billionaires out of nearly $300,000.

Julia Garner, recognized for her role in Ozark, plays the lead character, with a supporting cast that includes Laverne Cox, Arian Moayed, and Anthony Edwards. The series comprises nine episodes that depict the weeks leading up to Delvey's sensational trial. Despite her Russian origins, Delvey managed to convince others of her affluence through lavish tips and a keen sense of style, which allowed her to secure luxury services on credit, including a substantial loan aimed at launching an exclusive club.

Arrested in 2017 and released in 2021, Delvey's story is partly based on an article by journalist Jessica Pressler published in New York Magazine in 2018. Pressler's piece was informed by several visits to the former socialite in prison. Rhimes collaborated with her usual partner, Betsy Beers, and the series is directed by David Frankel, known for co-directing The Devil Wears Prada. Notably, Netflix paid Anna $320,000 for the rights to her story, further highlighting the intrigue surrounding her life and the impact of her elaborate scams.
