From Alcatraz to Stardom: The Early Days of Danny Glover

Starting a career alongside Clint Eastwood is a remarkable way to enter the film industry, and that’s exactly what this Hollywood star experienced. Danny Glover, who is now a household name, made his cinematic debut in a scene with the legendary actor.

In 1979, Clint Eastwood starred in the acclaimed film Escape from Alcatraz, directed by Don Siegel. This gripping narrative is set in 1962 and revolves around Frank Morris, a prisoner known for his cunning and composure. Morris is transferred to Alcatraz, a notorious fortress from which no one is believed to have escaped.

Morris quickly realizes that even the most formidable walls can have weaknesses. Alongside fellow inmates, the Anglin brothers, John and Clarence, he devises an audacious and meticulously planned escape. Using makeshift tools and remarkable patience, they begin to tunnel through the walls of their cells.

To mask their activities, the trio crafts dummy heads to fool the guards during their nightly absences. Every detail is crucial, as a single misstep could cost them their lives. In secret, they prepare to flee into the frigid waters of San Francisco Bay.

However, escaping Alcatraz is just the beginning; they must also survive the treacherous sea currents. Inspired by the real-life escape of 1962, Siegel’s film maintains a constant tension and striking realism. Featuring Clint Eastwood, Escape from Alcatraz tells an incredible story of a quest for freedom, shrouded in mystery even to this day.

This film also marked the debut of a future Hollywood star, who made a brief appearance alongside Eastwood. At the time, Glover was 33 years old, but he certainly was not "too old for this shit!"

Danny Glover's First Role

That star was none other than the incomparable Danny Glover, who would rise to global fame eight years later with the first installment of the Lethal Weapon franchise. In Escape from Alcatraz, Glover plays a prisoner who shares a fleeting moment with Frank Morris, portrayed by Clint Eastwood.

As Morris passes his cell with a cart full of books, Glover's character inquires about the whereabouts of English, played by Paul Benjamin. Although the scene lasts only about ten seconds, it was undoubtedly a significant moment for the emerging actor.

Not only did Glover share the screen with a cinema legend like Eastwood, but he also took his initial steps in the film industry. He would soon become accustomed to acting alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood, establishing himself as a prominent figure on the big screen.

Six years after his debut, Glover gained widespread recognition in The Color Purple (1985), directed by Steven Spielberg, where he played Albert Johnson, the husband of Celie Harris-Johnson, portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg.

Two years later, he landed the role that would become the hallmark of his career: Detective Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon (1987). Paired with Mel Gibson, Glover formed a dynamic duo whose chemistry significantly contributed to the franchise's success.

Now at the age of 80, Danny Glover is still not "too old for this shit," as he is set to reprise his role as Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon 5, which is expected to be directed by Mel Gibson, taking over from the late Richard Donner.
