Cameron explained his rationale during an appearance on In Depth With Graham Bensinger in January 2026, stating, "I offered that to the studio on a quid pro quo basis with them not doing stupid things to chop out scenes that were critical to the film." He emphasized that for him, the stakes went far beyond financial compensation. Creating Titanic represented the fulfillment of a vision and a story he deeply cared about. He remarked, "I preferred to have a coherent film, true to my vision, rather than being paid. It was more important."

The Risk of Losing Iconic Scenes
Cameron, whose earlier work on Abyss had proven prescient, was particularly worried about the impact of budget cuts on Titanic's final edit. He expressed his concerns about impulsive decisions that could lead to the removal of vital scenes, such as the engine room sequences, which are among the film's most intense moments. "Not only would that have severely harmed the film, but it would have also rendered all the work we had done up to that point meaningless," he added.
Ultimately, Titanic carried a production budget exceeding $200 million—an enormous sum at the time, which raised alarms among producers about the potential financial fallout for 20th Century Fox. As a result, Cameron agreed to forgo his approximately $8 million salary. However, his gamble paid off spectacularly, as Titanic went on to gross over $2 billion worldwide, validating his sacrifice and cementing the film's legacy as a cinematic masterpiece.
