Jurassic World Renaissance Faces Directorial Shake-Up and Delays

On August 7, 2026, it was announced that Gareth Edwards has stepped down from directing the upcoming installment of the Jurassic World franchise, titled Jurassic World Renaissance. This decision is attributed to ongoing creative differences, resulting in a rescheduling of the film's production to 2027. Despite this setback, David Koepp has completed the screenplay, and fans can expect to see familiar faces, including Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, returning to their roles. The anticipated release date is now projected for 2028.
In other Universal news, there are discussions about a sequel to The Mummy, directed by the duo Bettinelli-Olpin and T Gillett. This new film aims to bring back original cast members, including Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah. Interestingly, Kevin J. O'Connor will reprise his role as Beni Gabor, despite his character's demise in the first film. Additionally, Oded Fehr will return as Ardeth Bay, and Arnold Vosloo is set to reprise his role as the iconic villain Imhotep. The film is expected to feature Michael Johnston, known for his role in Obsession, as the son of the lead couple. The release is slated for October 13, 2027.
Warner Bros. remains undeterred by the disappointing performance of Matrix Resurrections, as they have announced a fifth installment in the Matrix series, with Drew Goddard taking the helm as director. It remains unclear whether the Wachowski sisters and Keanu Reeves will be involved in this new chapter.
Lastly, the trailer for I Play Rocky, directed by Peter Farrelly, has been released. The film, which seems to mark Farrelly's departure from comedy, focuses on the making of the original Rocky film.
