Madame Web: Dakota Johnson's Disappointing Experience with Marvel Film

Released on February 14, 2024, Madame Web, featuring Dakota Johnson in the lead role, has faced severe backlash from both critics and audiences, marking one of the lowest box office performances for a Marvel film.

The film, directed by S.J. Clarkson, was expected to fare better at the box office, with initial projections estimating an opening weekend gross of between $20 million to $25 million. Ultimately, it opened with $25.8 million but saw a staggering 61% drop in attendance by its second weekend. Despite its struggles in theaters, Madame Web did manage to secure the top spot in viewership when it debuted on Netflix in the U.S.

A Harrowing Experience

In a recent interview at Comic Con in San Diego, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura candidly discussed the film's disappointing performance. He described the theatrical experience as "heart-wrenching, like a hatchet blow to the head." Di Bonaventura expressed concern over the challenges of measuring success in the streaming era, stating, "When it doesn’t work on opening weekend, you get your head smashed in. The brutality of failure really forces you to focus on the next film. And I don’t want to relive that experience. It’s a very tough experience."

Following the film's release, Dakota Johnson also reflected on the project's shortcomings. In an interview with Bustle, she noted the complexities of filmmaking, particularly for big-budget projects. Johnson lamented, "It’s so hard to make movies, and in these big-budget films — and it’s starting to happen even with smaller ones, which really scares me — decisions are made by committees, and art doesn’t thrive when it’s done that way." She concluded with a poignant remark about her future in similar projects, stating, "I had never done something like this before. I probably won’t do it again, because I don’t belong in this world. And I know that now."
