Cinema Jove Returns to Valencia for Its 36th Edition

From June 18 to 26, Valencia will host the highly anticipated Cinema Jove festival, now entering its 36th year.

This year's official selection of feature films reflects the current economic and social climate, showcasing works from a variety of countries including Turkey, Denmark, Brazil, Australia, Ukraine, Greece, Russia, and North Macedonia. These films explore themes such as immigration, oppression, bourgeois life, and economic struggles.

The narratives delve into the transition from childhood to adulthood, shaped by the unique circumstances of each nation. Titles competing for the prestigious Luna de Valencia award include Looking for Venera, Brother's Keeper, The First Death of Joana, Ecstasy, The Whaler Boy, All the Little Pretty Horses, The Penultimate, and Friends and Strangers.

In addition to feature films, the festival will present a selection of 56 short films from 25 different countries. Among these are six shorts hailing from Valencia, directed by local talents such as Guillermo Alcalá-Santaella, Lucía Forner Segarra, Alba Just, Alba Pascual, Javier Robles, Kevin Castellano, and Edu Hirschfeld.

This year, actress Pula Usero will be honored with the Un Futuro de Cine award, recognizing her performances in notable works such as El Olivo, Velvet Colección, Paquita Salas, Amar es para siempre, and La boda de Rosa, for which she received a Goya nomination.

Festival attendees will also have the opportunity to view an exhibition of posters that traces the festival's journey since its inception. This display serves as a tribute to Valencia's designation as the World Capital of Design for 2022. A curated selection of 33 posters will be on display at the Octubre CCC from June 15 to July 20, with this year marking the introduction of an award for the best poster.
