Imagine watching a film under the stars, with a stunning view of the Corsican mountains—this is the enchanting experience offered by the Festival du film de Lama, which kicked off yesterday. Founded in 1994 by a group of local cinema lovers, the festival is known for its unique atmosphere.
For an entire week, this charming Corsican village showcases some of the most awaited films of the rentrée in an outdoor, family-friendly environment. The lineup includes titles like Notre salut, La Bola Negra, La Gradiva, La vie d'une femme (trailer above), and Minotaure.
The selection features highlights from the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, as well as a range of Corsican films, short films, and documentaries, all tied together by the theme "Chroniques d’un village monde." Among the special events of this edition is the premiere of La Prière aux étoiles, an unfinished film by Marcel Pagnol, which attendees are eagerly anticipating.
Opening with L'espèce explosive
The festival commenced with the screening of L'espèce explosive, a feature film by Sarah Arnold that was showcased at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes. The film, featuring performances by Alexis Manenti, Ella Rumpf, and Vincent Dedienne, has received a warm reception at Lama. How does one describe this film without revealing too much? "It's a film that starts as a rural tragedy and gradually transforms into a police thriller, set among the gendarmes. Then it slowly shifts into a romantic comedy, with a touch of other genres as well,” Arnold explained.
After receiving the Europa Cinéma Label at Cannes, the film was also awarded the Mare di Latte prize for women's cinema. "When I was informed of this award, it gave me confidence. I always worry about being too disruptive or having done something incorrect that strays too far from the norm. Receiving this award from a woman made me feel validated. I thought, 'this is mine',” she added.
