After years of rivalry, Jean-Claude Van Damme has declared an end to his feud with Steven Seagal, expressing a willingness to move forward.
For years, Jean-Claude Van Damme was embroiled in a fierce rivalry with fellow action star Steven Seagal, marked by verbal sparring and even near-physical confrontations. However, the star of "Bloodsport" has recently declared an end to their longstanding feud.
While Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have famously mended their friendship after years of animosity, Van Damme and Seagal have maintained their contentious relationship for decades—until now. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Van Damme expressed a desire to move past their differences. He stated, "I have no problem with Steven. When you are young, you want to be the macho. If I saw him today, I wouldn’t have a problem with it."
The feud was ignited in the 1990s when Seagal publicly questioned Van Damme's skills during an appearance on the Arsenio Hall Show. This insult did not sit well with Van Damme, who retaliated by criticizing Seagal's physical condition. The rivalry escalated to the point where Van Damme threatened Seagal with physical violence at a party hosted by Stallone, although Seagal declined to engage in a fight. Stallone himself once remarked that fighting Seagal would be like "squashing an ant."
Changing Times for Action Stars
As time passes, even tough action stars like Van Damme can adopt a more forgiving perspective. At 64, he seems to have embraced a more peaceful outlook. Despite their tumultuous past, it appears that both actors may prefer to avoid continuing a feud that began decades ago. However, the likelihood of seeing them share the screen in a film together seems slim, particularly given Seagal's recent career stagnation and his controversial ties to Russian leader Vladimir Putin. In contrast, Van Damme continues to work on films, albeit primarily in the direct-to-DVD market, as his peak years have long since passed.
Interestingly, the director of two of Seagal's major hits has also expressed negative sentiments towards the action star, further highlighting the complexities surrounding Seagal's legacy in Hollywood.
