Matt Damon Reflects on a Missed Opportunity in Film History

In 2002, Matt Damon faced a pivotal decision that would shape his career trajectory: he had to choose between starring in "The Bourne Identity" and a historical adventure film directed by the then-renowned Shekhar Kapur. This choice has lingered in Damon’s mind for over two decades.

Currently, Damon is receiving acclaim for his role in Christopher Nolan's epic fantasy, "The Odyssey." However, it’s surprising to learn that the Hollywood heavyweight often reminisces about a film he turned down 24 years ago, which ultimately flopped at the box office.

In 2002, Damon was approached for the lead role in the historical adventure "The Four Feathers." This film marked the seventh adaptation of Alfred Edward Woodley Mason's novel set against the backdrop of the British colonial war in Sudan.

The story follows young officer Harry Faversham, portrayed by Heath Ledger, who resigns from the army just before deployment and is subsequently branded a coward by his friends and fiancée, Ethne, played by Kate Hudson. To reclaim his honor, he ultimately returns to the front lines.

During a press conference for "The Odyssey" in Mumbai, Damon expressed his regret over missing the opportunity to work with Kapur, who gained international fame with his film "Elizabeth." He stated, "I remember that everyone wanted to work with Shekhar Kapur. I was really disappointed that I couldn’t make 'The Four Feathers' for some reason. I think I had already signed on for a Bourne film. So I’ve felt like I owe him something for over 20 years now."

Given that Damon debuted as Jason Bourne in the same year, it’s likely that his commitment to the Bourne franchise led him to decline "The Four Feathers." Looking back at the box office results, Damon might seem justified in his choice: while "The Bourne Identity" became a surprise hit and solidified his status as a leading man, "The Four Feathers" grossed only $29.8 million against an estimated budget of $80 million, marking it as a significant failure. Nonetheless, Damon had a strong desire to collaborate with Kapur, similar to fellow actor Richard Gere.

Shekhar Kapur Open to Collaboration

Interestingly, this dream collaboration might still become a reality, as Kapur has expressed his eagerness to work with Damon. In response to Damon’s comments in Mumbai, the director shared in an exclusive statement to NDTV: "I don’t believe there’s a director in the world who wouldn’t give their right arm to work with an actor who possesses as much emotional depth as Matt Damon. Who could ever forget his iconic scene with Robin Williams in 'Good Will Hunting'? I must have seen it over a thousand times and was moved to tears each time. Events move between the past, present, and future, while time exists only in our imagination. So now is the time, Matt, for us to finally collaborate."
