Public Breastfeeding: A National Petition Calls for Legal Protections for Mothers

Despite the absence of any legal prohibitions, women breastfeeding in public still encounter criticism, humiliation, and exclusion. To address this ongoing insecurity, a national petition has been launched, advocating for the establishment of a specific offense to protect breastfeeding mothers. Daily Humiliations in Public Spaces

Feeding a baby in a park, museum, or restaurant should never spark controversy. Yet, accounts from mothers facing aggressive remarks or being asked to leave public spaces continue to rise. Incidents include a mother being told to leave a municipal pool and a visitor being urged to hide in the restroom of a museum, revealing a troubling reality.

The perception of breastfeeding is often marred by the absurd sexualization of women's bodies. This fundamental act of care is sometimes mistakenly viewed as provocative or exhibitionist. Such societal pressures place parents in a difficult situation, where simply meeting the physiological needs of an infant becomes a source of anxiety.

Current Laws Fall Short of Protecting Families

In France, there are currently no laws prohibiting breastfeeding in public spaces. While the Public Health Code protects individual dignity and the Penal Code theoretically penalizes maternity-related discrimination, these general legal frameworks prove insufficient in deterring hostile behaviors in everyday life. The few specific regulations, like those in the Labor Code allowing for breastfeeding or pumping at work, do not extend to public areas.

In response to this legal gap, photographer Anastasia Cailly, founder of the movement "I’m Hungry, I Eat," has initiated a significant national petition. This document calls for the creation of a legal offense against hindering breastfeeding, specifically targeting intimidation, humiliation, or obstruction of a person breastfeeding. The initiative also aims to ensure explicit recognition of this right across all public venues, accompanied by a comprehensive national awareness campaign and improved training for professionals in the field.

Supporting Parenthood Requires Genuine Freedom of Choice

While institutional narratives often promote childbirth, mothers frequently find themselves unsupported amidst conflicting pressures. Whether a woman chooses breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, external judgments remain pervasive. This initiative does not seek to favor one feeding method over another but rather aims to secure a safe and supportive environment for all families.
