It’s hard to imagine the iconic character of Rocky Balboa without Sylvester Stallone’s portrayal. However, the actor and director nearly missed out on what became the defining role of his career.
In 1976, after a series of minor roles, including some in adult films, Stallone landed the part that catapulted him to stardom in John G. Avildsen’s Rocky. The franchise, which includes six films featuring the beloved boxer and three Creed installments, is now synonymous with Stallone. But this association almost never happened.
Doubts from Hollywood
Rocky is one of those films that few anticipated would become a classic. When Stallone penned the script in 1976, he quickly learned that Hollywood had little faith in him leading a feature film. In a candid interview with Stephen Olexy for the podcast Inspire Me in 2024, Stallone humorously recounted, "They didn’t want me," revealing that his contract included a clause allowing for his dismissal after just two weeks. At that time, he was not seen as a bankable star. As he explained, "I understand. I’ve been in the business for a long time. They couldn’t sell a ticket with me. In other words, they were thinking, ‘Okay, who do we have? Yeah, we’ve got this clown.’"

A Fortuitous Outcome
Interestingly, Stallone himself had doubts about the film’s cast. In his no-holds-barred interview, he noted that while the actors were talented, they didn’t seem like a guaranteed success on paper. "We ended up with a ship of fools, with nowhere to dock it," he remarked.
Despite these concerns, this unlikely assembly of talent resulted in one of the most beloved films of its time. Stallone expressed pride in the film's unexpected success, stating, "It was a true miracle... that everything came together, as all the participants were fantastic," adding, "It was as if they were born for these roles."
The legacy of the Rocky saga continues, with a tribute film titled I Play Rocky set to release on December 23. Directed by Peter Farrelly, known for Green Book and There’s Something About Mary, this biopic, featuring Anthony Ippolito, tells the story of how Stallone emerged from obscurity, encapsulated in the synopsis: "The incredible true story of an unknown actor driven by an unwavering belief: he was destined not just to write Rocky, but to be Rocky Balboa."
