Disney Acknowledges 'Star Wars' Misstep: All Eyes on Upcoming Sci-Fi Highlight

Disney has recently faced challenges with its latest release, "The Mandalorian & Grogu," which failed to attract a significant audience despite the company's overall satisfaction with its revenue. This admission comes as the studio navigates a crowded cinematic landscape in 2026, filled with high-profile films and expensive blockbusters.

The year has already seen significant successes, with "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" leading the global box office with over $1.1 billion in earnings. For Disney and Marvel Studios, the triumph of Sony Pictures is a beacon of hope, especially as they anticipate a resurgence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the upcoming release of "Avengers: Doomsday" on December 16, 2026.

However, the studio is in dire need of a hit, having already suffered two box office failures this year with "Vaiana" and "The Mandalorian & Grogu." While the disappointing performance of the live-action adaptation of the beloved "Vaiana" franchise caught many off guard, there were clear signs pointing to the struggles of "The Mandalorian & Grogu."

During a recent quarterly earnings presentation, Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro acknowledged the setbacks, but framed them in a positive light:

“Even if our franchise films did not meet box office expectations, as was the case with ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ and the live-action ‘Vaiana,’ investments in these core brands stimulate other areas of our business. ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ contributed to healthy growth in ‘Star Wars’ revenue, attracted guests to the newly redesigned Millennium Falcon attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and significantly increased interest in gaming.”

Can 'Star Wars' Be Revived with 'Starfighter'?

One of the main reasons behind the anticipated loss from "The Mandalorian & Grogu," estimated to be in the hundreds of millions, is the film's broad appeal, designed by director Jon Favreau to be accessible even to those unfamiliar with the series. Unfortunately, this approach left the movie feeling more like a two-hour filler episode rather than a substantial addition to the franchise.

In contrast, the next installment in the Star Wars saga, "Star Wars: Starfighter," is set to debut on May 26, 2027, under the direction of Shawn Levy, known for his work on "Deadpool & Wolverine." This film promises to introduce a completely new narrative within the beloved galaxy far, far away.

Adding to the excitement, Hollywood star Ryan Gosling has been cast in the lead role, following his recent success in the sci-fi film "The Astronaut." This casting choice is seen as a positive sign for the upcoming project.
