Jesse Metcalfe Reflects on His Departure from Desperate Housewives

Jesse Metcalfe, who played the gardener and romantic interest of Gabrielle Solis in the first season of Desperate Housewives, has shared insights into his unexpected exit from the show. Although his character, John Rowland, was integral to the storyline early on, he gradually faded into the background.

With Desperate Housewives set to return with a spinoff titled Wisteria Lane, it's a fitting moment to revisit Metcalfe's experience on the original series. His character's romance with Gaby, portrayed by Eva Longoria, began when she felt neglected by her husband, Carlos (Ricardo Chavira). However, after a strong first season presence, John Rowland's role diminished significantly.

In a recent episode of the podcast Not Skinny But Not Fat, Metcalfe revealed that he was ultimately let go from the series due to creative decisions. He recalled the words of the show's creator, Marc Cherry: "It's not Desperate House-gardeners. It's Desperate Housewives. Unfortunately, you will no longer be a regular character on the show. You will return occasionally." This blunt feedback highlighted the show's direction and the decision to limit his character's involvement.

A Philosophical Approach to Change

Despite the disappointment, Metcalfe approached the situation with a positive mindset. He commented, "I returned intermittently, but I wasn’t affected. I took things with philosophy." His ability to maintain a good attitude is commendable, especially since he recognized that his career was just beginning.

Reflecting on his aspirations, Metcalfe mentioned, "At that time, I was offered the movie John Tucker Must Die from 20th Century Fox. So I thought: 'Great, no problem, I’m going to become a movie star.'" Although he did not achieve the level of stardom he envisioned, he continued to pursue acting.

He made guest appearances in seasons 2, 4, and 6 of Desperate Housewives, during which John Rowland evolved from a naive young man to a mature businessman, divorced and owning a restaurant by season 6. Despite his reduced presence, fans of the show have not forgotten his role in the series.
