Navigating Winter Skincare: A Review of Paula's Choice and Clarins Men
A review of Paula's Choice serum and Clarins Men Day Cream, focusing on their effectiveness in winter skincare routines.

As I travel back from the enchanting city of Bruges, I find myself reflecting on my current skincare routine. Sundays often call for a product review, and today, I want to focus on facial care essentials. I won’t delve into every aspect of my skincare regimen, which would take an entire day to unpack. Instead, I’ll spotlight the vital duo at the heart of any beauty routine: the serum and day cream. Trust me, this will keep us occupied!
To give you the most informed opinion, I prefer to share my thoughts only after finishing a product. Both the serum and cream I’m discussing are now empty, having been part of my routine since December. This leads me to ponder my choices, as they weren't the most intuitive for winter skincare. I must admit, my decision-making skills in beauty (and life) can sometimes be questionable. Nevertheless, I found these products adequate for the season, despite not being overly impressed.
First up is the Paula's Choice serum. I was intrigued by this product because it’s one of the few from the brand that doesn’t contain retinol. Given that I often represent the brand in media, I felt it was time to try it out. The promise of a "super antioxidant concentrate serum" caught my attention, similar to how gourmet ingredients entice a food lover. This serum contains vitamin C along with a range of other complementary ingredients designed to help the skin combat aging.
Evaluating the effectiveness of such products can be challenging. How does one measure the antioxidant effect on their skin? Personally, I tend to look younger than my age, and my skin shows minimal signs of aging, which complicates any assessment. I aim to maintain my youthful appearance, and I believe this serum has contributed positively in that regard. For optimal results, the brand recommends applying it both morning and night. I included it in my morning routine but neglected to pair it with sunscreen, which is crucial, especially with vitamin C products. While I didn’t see much sun during winter, I advise you to be diligent about sun protection in warmer months.
A positive aspect of the product is its opaque, airless packaging, which likely helps preserve the integrity of the vitamin C. However, I do have some reservations about its texture. I expected a watery consistency, but it felt more like an oil. While some oils absorb quickly, this one left a slightly greasy film on my skin initially, which wasn’t pleasant. After a few minutes, this sheen disappeared, but it did leave my skin looking a bit shiny right after application.
According to the brand, it's suitable for normal to dry or combination skin, but I’m not entirely convinced it would work for all skin types. In summary, the formula seems solid, and I managed to maintain my youthful look for three additional months. I would recommend this serum primarily for preventive anti-aging use, ideally for those aged 25 to 40. However, it should be complemented with a hydrating product, as I found it lacking in moisture.
Moving on to the Clarins Men Day Cream, I have a more definitive opinion. This gel, marketed for men, is not something I would typically choose, as I usually opt for gender-neutral or even feminine products. Additionally, its gel texture isn’t my favorite, especially during winter, when I prefer richer formulations. The cream promises an energizing effect, which is appealing but may not suffice for someone in their late thirties.
Reflecting on my choice to include this product in my routine, I wonder what led me to it. Perhaps it was my trust in the Clarins brand or the eye-catching red packaging. After using it for three months, my conclusion is straightforward: it didn’t wow me.
The packaging is modern, featuring a twist cap that reveals the pump, making it user-friendly. However, I found the pump to be a bit too forceful, resulting in the gel sometimes splattering on my clothes. That said, the primary concern was the cream’s lightweight texture. While it may be suitable for younger or oilier skin types, I found it insufficient for my needs, especially since this winter was relatively mild in Paris.
In conclusion, while both products have their merits, they didn’t meet my expectations for winter skincare. The Paula's Choice serum offers some benefits, but its texture and lack of hydration may limit its appeal. Meanwhile, the Clarins Men Day Cream, although functional, is too lightweight for my skin type. Choosing the right products for your skin’s needs is crucial, especially during colder months.
