The Launch of the Sixth Life Beyond Life Film Festival and Its International Juries
An engaging start to the LBLFF focused on pianist Carmelo Spoto, with international juries already at work for the 2026 edition. The opening night featured a concert and screenings of competing short films.
The sixth edition of the Life Beyond Life Film Festival (LBLFF) kicked off with an engaging inauguration on May 14 at the Auditorium Orpheus of the Educatorio della Provvidenza. The event featured a captivating piano concert by Carmelo Spoto, who showcased his exceptional talent through a challenging repertoire. The audience, numbering around eighty, was treated to a profound musical experience, especially during Spoto's performances of Liszt's "La Campanella" and "Il Mephisto Waltz No. 1," as well as the premiere of his own composition, "Beyond," created specifically for the festival.
The festival’s international juries are already at work evaluating a total of 49 films in competition. The Documentary Jury, led by Spanish filmmaker Ricard Mamblona Agüera, includes notable members such as Italian journalist Cristiano Tassinari and American researcher Craig R. Hogan. They will ultimately select three standout documentaries from the submissions.
The Short Film Jury, chaired by filmmaker Lucio Toma and coordinated by film critic Giacomo Tinti, is responsible for reviewing 16 short films. This jury features a diverse group, including actress Luciana Nigro and Lebanese director Youssef Khoueiry.
Additionally, the Shorts Docs Jury, which will assess eight selected works, is presided over by Austrian musician Sebastian Schwarz. This panel also includes various professionals passionate about cinema, such as baritone Antonino Giacobbe and Spanish educator Sergio Vásquez González.
The Art Movies Jury, a female-led group evaluating nine films, is headed by Lisa Martelli, the President of the Religion Today Film Festival. The jury comprises professionals from various fields, including psychologist Laura Salvai and researcher Francesca Lucà.
In this edition, an internal technical committee of the LBLFF will also award prizes for Best Feature Film, Best Animated Film, and Best Italian Afterlife Film, among other potential recognitions.
Andrea Morghen, the festival's programming director, expressed satisfaction with the opening night, stating, "It was a truly high-level evening for the inauguration of our festival. Everything was designed with artistry, rhythm, and passion. The delicate short films complemented the exceptional musical program, allowing Carmelo Spoto to demonstrate his artistry and connect with the audience."
Operations Manager and co-founder Matteo Valier highlighted the festival's commitment to quality, stating, "We strive to curate the jury selection carefully, ensuring a mix of industry professionals, critics, musicians, and cinema enthusiasts. For the 2026 edition, we are fortunate to have Ricard Mamblona Agüera, Sebastian Schwarz, Lisa Martelli, and Lucio Toma leading our juries."
The festival is supported by various cultural and municipal partners, including the Metropolitan City of Turin and the Religion Today Film Festival. It also collaborates with the Film Commission Torino Piemonte and has media partnerships with several organizations.
As the festival progresses to locations such as Pino Torinese and Avigliana, excitement builds for the upcoming screenings and discussions that will further enrich the cinematic experience at LBLFF.
