Measles: Vaccination Will Become Mandatory for Early Childhood Professionals Starting in 2026

We thought of measles as a vintage childhood memory, but the epidemiological reality is catching up with us quite brutally. To protect our babies, a new law now mandates vaccination for all early childhood professionals starting in the second half of 2026.

The Safety of Our Children Depends on Adult Immunity

One might think that measles is just a minor skin disease that itches a bit, but that is far from the truth. It is a highly contagious virus that can lead to serious complications, particularly in infants who are too young to be vaccinated.

In 2025, Public Health France reported over 800 cases, and children under four years old were the most affected. In light of this finding, the government has decided to take action regarding the immediate environment of our little ones.

Article 55 of the 2026 Social Security Financing Law changes the game. Until now, vaccination was only recommended for adults caring for children. It is now a legal obligation. By ensuring that the responsible adults are immunized, we drastically reduce the risk of contamination outbreaks in childcare settings.

Your Childcare Becomes a Protected Space

In practice, this measure applies to both nursery staff and childminders. Immunity must be proven either by an up-to-date health record or by serology confirming that the professional has already had the disease.

For childminders, the verification will occur at the time of obtaining or renewing their accreditation. For employees in facilities, it will be the employer's responsibility to ensure this protection starting at the end of 2026. It is important to clarify that this rule only applies to the professionals themselves. The families of nannies or childcare workers are not subject to this obligation, although awareness remains important for the entire surrounding community.

A Solidarity Advancement for Everyone's Health

The vaccine used is the well-known MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella). In France, it has been mandatory for all children born since 2018. Extending this measure to the professionals who supervise them is a logical and compassionate step. It is a collective health initiative that protects children as well as immunocompromised individuals for whom measles can be fatal.

Even though the number of cases has tended to decrease at the beginning of 2026, vigilance remains essential. This law allows us to anticipate future epidemic peaks and ensures that our childcare facilities remain safe places.
